Learn more about: Two-Phase Treatment | Retainers | iBraces | Surgical Orthodontics
Retainers may be either removable or fixed. They hold your teeth in their new corrected position after your teeth have been straightened and the braces removed. The more commonly used removable retainers are generally worn only while sleeping, for as long as necessary to maintain the corrected alignment. Third molars and/or clenching or grinding of the teeth may require indefinite nighttime wear of the retainers. Lack of or poor retainer wear will most likely cause a return of some crowding especially with the lower front teeth. Retainers should always be brought to the office so that they can be checked for fit and adjusted if necessary.
Retainers should be placed in their case when not being worn or soaking in a cleaning solution (Efferdent). Retainers should be cleaned daily using a toothbrush and toothpaste. Soaking helps eliminate plaque and odors but does not replace brushing. Over time retainers will show signs of wear and tear and may need replaced. Pets, especially dogs are the number one reason for lost or damaged retainers. Retainers are adversely affected by extreme heat, dishwashers, clothes washers and easily lost if wrapped in a napkin or tissue. Lost or broken retainers should be replaced immediately to prevent any unwanted movement.
