Braces for Children and Adults

Orthodontics for Kids

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have an orthodontic checkup with an orthodontist no later than age seven. The six year molars and permanent incisors have usually erupted by this age and the orthodontist can detect problems such as crossbites, crowding, protrusions, harmful habits and some jaw discrepancies. For some, early treatment may reduce significant problems but for most, the principal benefit is the parent’s peace of mind, knowing the problem can be corrected with full braces at a later date.

Usually the best time to start treatment is when only four baby teeth remain which allows the orthodontist to not only start the alignment before all the permanent teeth have erupted but also to take advantage of any remaining growth. Most children around the age of 11 would be ready for full braces. Once all the permanent teeth have erupted, treatment could start anytime.

Orthodontics for Adults

Many more adults are discovering the benefits of orthodontic treatment. Actually, one in five patients in treatment is over the age of 21. Typically, adults may require a little more time to complete treatment since growth has been completed. However, adults are usually better patients since they are paying for their own investment in a more attractive and healthier smile. Some adults, especially those with missing teeth, significantly worn teeth or bone loss around the teeth usually require the orthodontist to work in unison with the dentist and/or periodontist. Adult braces are usually different from a child’s to be less conspicuous or totally invisible (Incognito).
